The Daily Divot: The When-Then Game
The When-Then Game
“If you’re honest with yourself, then you may realize it’s really just an excuse for not taking immediate action, or it’s a way of avoiding doing something fearful.”
- Graham Price of The Promise
Price says the problem with the When-Then game is we keep playing it. We always find a reason to keep hesitating. He wasn’t talking about golf, but I think it applies just as well.
My When-Then golf game went like this... I start the season wanting to play well, work on my swing, and get better at driving or whatever it is.
I struggle a bit and say to myself, “Hmm I should get a lesson”. But I hesitate and say “Well let’s wait until after a few more rounds and then I’ll decide”. The next few rounds feel good and then I go… “Well I don’t want to get a lesson now, it’ll mess my game up!” I kept playing this game every year to my own detriment.
For some of you, it might sound something like…
“Well, when I break 100 I will… [fill in the blank]!”
It could be getting a lesson, getting fitted for new clubs, or practicing your putting.
If you notice yourself playing this game, stop finding reasons to hesitate and commit.
