The Process is the Way
As my golf season wraps up, I’ve been reflecting on the past months and setting goals for the off-season when I came across this timely quote from Ryan Holiday’s book, The Obstacle Is the Way:
“In the chaos of sport, as in life, process provides us a way.”
It’s a powerful reminder.
So often, we lose focus on the process and become fixated on the end goal. I’ll admit, I was guilty of that at times this season (more on that in a future deep-dive post). It’s human nature.
But this is your reminder—and mine—that the process matters most. It’s what ultimately guides us to our goals.
Focus on what you can control: your effort, practice, decision-making, and discipline.
In an earlier post titled Goal Setting, I explored why the process is so important. Here's a quick recap:
“Studies have found that process goals are more effective than outcome goals. This is because they focus on the how versus the what. Dr. Alex Auerbach says they do this by providing a clear action, anchoring you to the present, and allowing for quick wins.”
I’ll leave it to Ryan for the final word:
“Okay, you’ve got to do something very difficult. Don’t focus on that. Instead break it down into pieces. Simply do what you need to do right now. And do it well. And then move on to the next thing. Follow the process and not the prize.”

More great content from Mike Carroll on increasing swing speed. It’s also great timing, as the off-season is approaching, and many of us have more time to focus on speed training, fitness, and flexibility.
Mike is offering 20% off with a yearly subscription, and there’s also a free 7-day trial offer if you're unsure.
Check out his website, Fit for Golf, for details.
Practicing with your gamer is impossible for many amateur golfers. But this is still a good reminder that range balls are significantly worse than on-course balls.
I still hit range balls, but make sure you aren’t using range distances and trajectories as references for on-course play.
Use range ball feedback mainly for strike quality and general movement patterns.

Bryson has been attempting a hole-in-one challenge OVER HIS HOUSE.
He’s hitting wedge shots over his house onto a green about 100 yards away.
Each day, he gets another shot.
Day 1 = 1 shot
Day 2 = 2 shots
Day 7 = 7 shots
and so on…
He’s now on day 9.
It’s highly entertaining—not just because I’m half-expecting him to send a line drive through his house, but also because I’m eager to see if he’ll finally get a hole-in-one.
Bryson has come incredibly close, and his consistency is nothing short of amazing.
Check out the 'Stat of the Week' below for the odds of Bryson making a hole-in-one.
Self-taught golfer Jay (@bay_jark) has quickly become one of my favorite golf content creators.
Not only does he have an incredible swing, but he also shares excellent advice in a way that’s clear and easy to understand.
🔢 Stat(s) of the Week 🔢
How long do you think it will take? I say he’ll do it by day 20.

Process vs. Goal. Difficult for me to pick process over goal. Working on it.
