Nick Saban and The Process
The Process is Just a Definition of What You Have to Do to Accomplish a Goal
The University of Alabama Football Coach Nick Saban announced his retirement on Wednesday, shocking the football world.
Saban is considered by many to be the greatest college football coach of all time, winning 7 National Championships. He is among only three coaches to win a National Championship with two teams.
Much of Saban’s success has come from what he calls “The Process.” Over the years, Saban concluded that a process-oriented approach is better for competitors because it keeps them focused on the right things.
Not the results but what it takes to get the results.
I’ve mentioned Saban before in my piece titled Goal Setting, which focuses on ways to set and achieve your golf goals.
Why is a process mindset better?
“Studies have found that process goals are more effective than outcome goals. This is because they focus on the how versus the what. Dr. Alex Auerbach says they do this by providing a clear action, anchoring you to the present.”
But above all else, the process is really all you can control. You can’t control an outcome or your score.
You can control whether you follow a preshot routine, select smart targets, or practice your wedge game. And when you focus on these inputs, the output takes care of itself.
“The process is just a definition of what you have to do to accomplish a goal. But you have to have the discipline to execute it every day.”
Here’s a video with Saban talking about The Process:
Have a good weekend.
