Fall Golf
Fall golf is officially here for those of us in northern climates. The crisp air and changing colors come with shorter days and hard-to-find shots in the rough.
I stumbled across an article from the USGA where they discuss some of these seasonal issues:
Every golfer has experienced the scenario as summer turns to fall: your drive misses the fairway by just a few yards – and ends up hidden in plain sight in a pile of leaves. Or that comfortable late afternoon nine-hole round suddenly turns into a sprint to the finish because of dwindling daylight.
In much of the country, the end of summer is signaled by cooler temperatures, shorter days and a new set of circumstances impacting golfers’ rounds.
Although I love some fall golf, I also hate when I can’t find my ball three feet off the fairway because a million leaves make it difficult to find.
To my surprise, there is a rule for that (sometimes).
You know generally where your ball ended up, but there is a large pile of leaves and you’re confident your ball is somewhere under that pile.
You are entitled to free relief only if the golf course or the Committee running a tournament has enacted Model Local Rule F-14, which allows areas with temporary accumulations of loose impediments (like a pile of leaves or grass clippings) to be treated as ground under repair.
This means that you can take free relief for a ball that you know is in the pile, even if you can’t find it.
Most of us are playing a casual round where local rules don’t matter. So, as long as it’s agreed upon with buddies, I’m a proponent of extending the leaf rule for anything clearly in bounds, but we can’t find it due to the fall conditions.
Here’s another fall rule from Mark the Caddie that I could get behind.
Enjoy the weather while it lasts!

I’ve never been big on stretching, but now that I’m in my 40s, the tide has turned, and my body isn’t as limber as it used to be. The video above comes from TPI (more on them later) and details Charlie Hoffman’s daily mobility routine.
If you have tight hips like me, give this routine a try.
Great tip from PGA Tour player Michael Kim. I’d venture to say most of us do NOT write down or go into a practice session with specific goals in mind. I know I don’t.
I’m going to try this for the next range session. Instead of mindlessly hitting a bucket of balls, I’ll work on a couple of specific things I want to work on and stick to those drills.
Here's another gem from Michael Kim.
Are you in pursuit mode or avoidance mode? It’s a subtle difference, but one that can greatly affect your demeanor on the course.
Instead of focusing on what you don’t want to happen or what happened on the last shot, ask what shot you're trying to hit. Commit.
This ties into one of our old posts called Training vs Playing (below).

I’ve featured multiple videos from TPI with Dr. Greg Rose in the past. In this No Laying Up video, Dr. Greg shows how he and TPI perform detailed physical assessments related to the nuances in the body swing connection.
Dr. Greg devises individually tailored solutions to improve mobility and longevity.
This was an amazing process to watch, and it made me jealous of all the info the NLU folks were getting. A very different approach to improving ones golf swing.
🔢 Stat(s) of the Week 🔢
$62 million. Absolutely insane numbers here.
Not only did Scottie win a ton of money, but he posted the lowest scoring average in a season ever at 68.01, which bested Tigers 2000 season average of 68.17.
