The Daily Divot: The 2/3rds Rule
The 2/3rds Rule:
“You don’t need to be perfect to have a great round of golf; you need to be patient. At least one part of your game is going to abandon you. If you can remind yourself that mistakes are OK and have the mental resolve to dig in, your scores will improve.”
-Jon Sherman (@practicalgolf)
T2C: Jon breaks down his golf game into 3 parts: Tee shots, Approach shots and Finesse shots (anything inside 100).
I personally break it down into: tee shots, approach shots, short game and putting. But no matter how you slice it, more often than not, your going to struggle in at least 1 of these areas during a round.
As Jon says, you can still play great golf even when one of these facets abandons you. Acknowledging this requires a slight mental shift, but one that is more forgiving and closer to reality.
Be patient, accept what you got that day, and put up a score.
PS: The above quote comes from Jon Sherman’s excellent book The Four Foundations of Golf. It’s the best golf book I’ve read.
