It’s been a busy and exhausting week in Golf news. Jon Rahm officially made the leap to LIV with other top players rumored to follow, the USGA officially announced a Rollback of the golf ball, and Tiger Woods might be splitting up with Nike. Phew. What a week.
Rollback
I was planning on writing a deep dive on the rollback, but with all the news, I got a bit sidetracked. There are a ton of podcasts, articles, and data sets that came out (and still are) detailing what this rollback means for amateurs. I want to get my head around all aspects of this rule change before going in-depth, so keep an eye out for that.
Rahm to LIV
As for Jon Rahm and LIV. I don’t have much to say except that this is a bad look for the PGA. The PGA Tour needs to figure things out quickly before the average fan stops watching and just tunes into the Majors.
One more point on Rahm leaving the PGA Tour. This may end up being the catalyst that forces the PGA to the table, leading to a global unified golf tour.
All fans want is the best players in the world playing against each other. I have no idea if that will happen, but if it does, Rahm will have made possibly the greatest money heist of all time!
It’ll be interesting to see where this goes, but one thing is for sure, it will be messy.
Tiger and Nike
Tiger leaving Nike just seems unnatural. He is synonymous with the brand, just like Michael Jordan was and still is. But rumors are swirling that Tiger’s deal with Nike will end early next year. There’s been a lot of chatter about Tiger wearing non-Nike shoes, so maybe there is something to this.
TaylorMade is apparently making a bigger push into apparel, so could TW be making a switch to TM?
Not much golf advice this Friday as I got caught up in all the hoopla. But the weather is warmer this weekend, so I’ll be hitting up the range to knock off some rust.
I’ll do my best to ignore the noise and get back to improving our games next week.
Enjoy the weekend.
